have been thinking about how to transform traffic cones into art. want to do it in a way which is new and also respects the traffic coneness of traffic cones. a couple of animation stills from last week:

the camera has a hard time taking a picture which looks the same as it appears when you're looking at it in person, but below you can see its best efforts - red, green and blue projected onto strips of grey, yellow, green, blue, purple, red, orange, black and white paper. to get a sens of just how off the camera is, look at the right-most strip, white - that looks really vivid when you see it - maybe i needed to play with the settings a bit - spent most of the time talking with people about the project rather than documenting it - will be back today with chess.

i want certain things to happen in my life. are they happening right now? are they likely to happen if i continue on as i am right now?
it is becoming increasingly obvious that in order to accomplish certain things i need to change who i am and what i do.
it is hard for artists to be honest in their work, i think. it is hard for people to be honest in their lives.
it is easy to change but maybe not so easy to recognize that we need to become someone different if we are going to be able to do the things we want to do.

hadn't thought about it until just now, but the shadow world features heavily in this piece. could say a lot more about it but not tonight, i want to go to sleep.

remember when i sold some used paintbrushes (palette, rag, etc.) to be used as props on a film set? well, the art consultant remembered my work, and she picked up some paintings last week, right now they're decorating catherine zeta jones' character's apartment (the movie is called "the rebound").
and she saw another piece which she recommended to another art consultant, which today was used in a shoot for "the international," hung in the apartment of clive owens' and naomi watts' characters.
this painting was begun as part of sonntag (you can see it in the top-right picture), then i kept working on it afterwards (rotated to horizontal from vertical, added colors). about seven or eight years ago. it's six feet wide and sixteen inches high and it really doesn't look like what i'm doing these days.
but it has been nice to look at these abstract paintings from those days when i was so confused about what i was doing or what i wanted to do that i would "just paint" sometimes. these days the closest i come to that is jabbing away with a pencil on a piece of paper while i try to organize some thoughts. maybe i want to start messing around again? maybe even with paint?

anyway it is back-and-forth and evolving, and what is here is already completely obsolete, we're going somewhere different (but this was a starting point of sorts)

kisokaido on my mind again. conflux deadline is coming up http://confluxfestival.org/conflux2008/, since matthew educated me about the situationists and guy debord and psychogeography, have been thinking, for over a year now, that conflux would be a natural venue to share the kisokaido piece.
then this morning david asked me what site i used to make my training maps last year (mapmywalk.com).
the thing about this project is that, all along, we haven't been sure what we are doing, exactly. i mean, i haven't been sure exactly what i'm doing? it has gone back and forth between being collaborative and solo. i want to make something that feels like my work (new media installations, conceived as "moving paintings") and still pay homage to hiroshige (who made what was essentially "pop art" at the time, not quite mass media i don't think - not sure what it is comparable to these days). which means that the end product should be collectible from the lower end of the economic spectrum.
more recently, i've been thinking that the situationist influence on the project necessitates "viewer" participation. haven't talked with matthew for weeks or longer, and he essentially told me he was no longer interested in collaging or really artmaking after we completed the walk. i could always do what we had originally planned (the dynamic online collage idea) but i'm not sure that's what i want to do.
so right now i have this idea using a treadmill and a backpack. but i would need technical assistance. i think. and a treadmill. anyway today i will try to refine this idea and put a proposal together, for conflux.
